favourite Russian film director Alexander Sokurov (Faust, Russian Ark), a prominant critic of President Vladimir Putin, introduced that he's shutting down his unbiased movie foundation, Primer Inotnatsii (illustration of Intonation), amid force from Russia's culture ministry.

Sokurov installation the foundation in 2013 to support younger Russian filmmakers. It has helped produce a couple of shorts and feature-length films, including Kantemir Balagov's Tesnota (Closeness), which won the international critics award for Cannes' Un definite Regard area at Cannes in 2017.

but the groundwork has suffered from a lack of funding and has come under fire from Russia's lifestyle ministry. last 12 months, police in St. Petersburg launched a investigation into the groundwork on expenses Sokurov changed into the use of the organization to embezzle money earmarked for movie construction. The probe found no facts of wrongdoing.

Many considered the investigation as an assault on Sokurov for his ongoing and vocal criticisms of Vladimir Putin. The director has time and again called for the free up of Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian filmmaker imprisoned in Russia on terrorism costs and serving a 20-yr sentence. As one among Russia's most excellent generic directors — Sukurov has had 5 films in competition in Cannes and gained the Golden Lion in Venice in 2011 for Faust — he has long been a thorn in the facet of the Kremlin.

Sokurov become quoted via information company Interfax as saying, "unfriendliness and aggressiveness" from Russia's lifestyle ministry, directed individually at him, made it not possible to continue with the basis.
