whereas song has advanced in its complexity over the millennia, the ability of recording it remained the equal: it needed to be written down.

It took until the again-half of the nineteenth Century before credible attempts had been made to bottle sound for the first time, and in 1877 Thomas Edison produced the Phonograph.

Over the next century, primary advances had been made in recording codecs, recording duration, and sound first-class, from the Gramophone listing to the cassette tape to the compact disc.

but as this programme exhibits, cost and convenience played a major position during this development, rather than the excellent of technology - on occasion the ideal innovations failed to win out.
